Urges Rio to return and reunite party, salvage situation
In a significant political development, four NPF legislators have urged upon the NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to revoke the suspension of membership from the party on former chief minister and current LoK Sabha, MP Neiphiu Rio and former minister, Imkong L. Imchen, MLA.
The two had been suspended for alleged anti-party activities by the party president on the recommendation of the NPF Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC). Rio was suspended on May 17, 2016 and Imchen on April 14, 2016.
In a letter to the NPF president the four legislators– Noke Wangnao, C.M. Chang, Namri Nchang and Er. Kropol Vitsu pointed out that the situation in Nagaland had turned into a serious crisis with mass based civil societies and tribal organisations totally opposed to the leadership of the DAN Government as a result of the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections.
Since the time the agitation was launched, with the support of the masses, there was complete breakdown of law and order, the legislators said.
The situation also resulted in the death of three persons and injury to dozens of people. They further said people were demanding action against police and had negatively received the flag marches carried out by the army.
Terming it as an unprecedented situation that was never before witnessed, the MLAs said the state government machinery had been totally shutdown and the arms of the government not been functioning for the past nine days
In the light of the present crisis, the four legislators appealed to the NPF party to revoke the suspension orders of Neiphiu Rio and Imkong Imchen. “This will pave the way for party unity and reconciliation at the most crucial time,” they added.
They acknowledged the fact that Rio had gone to Delhi as an Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), in the greater interest of the Nagas and to strengthen the peace process in order to facilitate in bringing about solution to the political problem.
However, since the situation had gone out of control, the MLAs told the NPF president that they have appealed Rio, as the tallest and most acceptable leader of the Nagas, to return to the State and reunite the party, salvage the situation and further strengthen their relationship with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Delhi, for the greater interest of peace and development in Nagaland.
The four MLAs said their views, advice and opinion were being put across not just on their individual capacity but as a result of their interactions with elected members, people’s representatives, leaders of masses and cross sections of society.
They further reminded the president that the need of the hour was for the government to listen to the voice of the people and to respond in a positive manner so that peace, order and administration could be restored as early as possible.
