Department of health and family welfare Nagaland Kohima has launched the 2nd phase of “National De-Worming Day (NDD) on Thursday.
In Kohima, NDD was launched by mission director National Health Mission (NHM) of health and family welfare Nagaland, Dr. Limaakum Jami at Christ King Higher Secondary School Kohima.
In a keynote address, director health and family welfare in-charge, Dr. M.A Wati, said during NDD observation children between 1-19 years of age would be targeted to receive treatment for parasitic intestinal worms (soil transmitted helminthiasis) through the platform of schools and anganwadi centres.
He informed that the first national de-worming day was successfully implemented in 11 states in February 2015 and de-wormed 89.8 million children in the age group of 1-19 years.
Dr. M.A Wati said the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends “de-worming of all school age and pre-school age children” with the global target aiming to eliminate morbidity due to worms (soil-transmitted helminths) in children by 2020.
He said the government of India aims to cover at least 90% of all children through the NDD programme. He informed according to WHO, 65% of children in India between 1-14 years are at risk of worm infestation. He said worm infection in children leads to anaemia, weakness, nutritional impairment, loss of appetite, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss etc.
He said the programme would carry out in coordination with health and family welfare, department of school education and women and child development (ICDS), health workers, school teachers and anganwadi workers with supervisors.
He said the goal and objective of NDD is to de-worm all the pre-school and school –age children (enrolled and non-enrolled ) between the ages of 1-19 years through the platform of government aided schools, private schools and Anganwadi centres in order to improve their overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life.
Dr. Wati disclosed that in February and March 2016 administered 5, 48,249 and 6, 52,493 children with achievement of 88.8% and 90.1% respectively and this year in march 1st phase has achieved 94.9% with 6, 76,691 children administered de-worming.
The programme was held in the school assembly with hundred students. Deputy Director (AH) directorate of health and family welfare Dr. Khriesilie Sachu, proposed the vote of thanks. (Correspondent)
LONGLENG: District Hospital Longleng observed NDD on August 10, at Bautung Government Higher Secondary School, School Auditorium.
Dr Lirenthung MO MHT (RBSK) spoke on the importance and the benefits of de-worming children which is essential to control worm transmission in the community and is safe and beneficial for all children and adults.
He also spoke on the several harmful health issues because of worm infection such anemia, nutritional impairment, loss of appetite etc.
IEC materials and de-worming tablets were given free of cost at schools and distributed at the block level as well.
The programme was attended by District Media Officer Roseline and Nurse Atula and the staffs and students of Bautung Higher Secondary School.
WOKHA: NDD was launched in Wokha district on August 10, targeting children from 1-19 years.
A press note by NHM media officer, Mhonbeni Ezung stated that trained programme representatives, medical department, education and social welfare departments, teachers, anganwadi workers and helpers were detailed to ensure that all targeted group of children received the de-worming tablet free of cost in schools and anganwadi centres.
The ASHAs were also entrusted to provide the de-worming tablets for children at the villages.
The medical officers at the health units were briefed on the programme and to set up a corner for dispensing deworming tablets to children coming at the health unit.
Dr. Zathung DPO UIP/RCH called upon all the health workers volunteers, supervisors involved in the deworming day to ensure that every child in the district were dewormed without fail.
The mopped up day would be on August 17 for children who could not be de-wormed on the de-worming day.
