Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) Kohima Unit and Kohima Baptist Bumeinok Kohima (KBBK) Sheko Khong have expressed strong displeasure over the prevalence of child labour and human trafficking.
KNSK Kohima unit general secretary, C N Moe, said the organizations strongly opposed and discouraged keeping Konyak children as domestic helpers and also those involved in providing poor children from Konyak community as domestic labours.
With the social challenges confronting the community, KNSK Kohima unit and KBBK Sheko Khong organized a one-day seminar on child labour, cybercrime, and Christian parenting at the Red Cross complex, here Saturday with Nagaland State Legal service Authority (NSLSA) member secretary, Nino Iralu; trainer and NSLSA legal aid counsel, Limasenla Longkumer, and NPSC chairman, A. Yanang Konyak, as resource persons.
Speaking on child labour, human trafficking and legal implication, Nino Iralu, briefed the gathering about the child labour (prohibition and regulation) in Naga context. She said that the prevalence of child labour in the form of domestic help in Naga society was very alarming.
Iralu pointed out that supply of children particularly to work as child domestic labour in cities and towns was a gross violation of Child Rights.
The resource person opined that the family and society were all contributing to the child labour problem and stressed on the basic rights of a child such as survival, development, protection and participation.
She expressed the view that a child needed full development of mental and social wellbeing without discrimination and abuse while considering the child’s best interest.
Highlighting the various schemes implemented by the centre and the state government for women and child’s welfare, Iralu said there were ample systems to control child labour and other discrimination against women and children. She underscored that every individual had a vital role to play in combating child labour and violence against women.
Speaking on the topic “cybercrime and preventive measures”, Limasenla Longkumer, said cybercrime was a fastest growing global crime. She said cybercrimes had no jurisdiction and there was a risk of anyone becoming a victim. Longkumer said cybercrime could only be reduced by taking various preventive measures.
The recourse person said that lack of knowledge was one of the major factors that victimized a person in a crime network. In this regard, she urged the people to be alert and to seek help of the police and experts.
Also, speaking on the topic “Christian parenting”, the resource person, A Yanang Konyak, highlighted the purpose of marriage and stressed on five points: in compliance with God’s command, for companionship, for helping one another, for satisfaction of biological desire and for honour. He said that true marriage should be the principle of marriage. He also advocated in-depth study of the purpose of the marriage. Konyak reminded the legal age for marriage and balancing the responsibility of marriage. The resource person stated that a child should be matured enough to take his or her own decision.
KBBK Pastor, H Moba, pronounced invocation while KNSK Kohima unit president, Lemnon Konyak, delivered welcome address. KNSK Kohima unit information & press secretary, Emilo K Konyak, and KBBK Shekho Khong leader, Manngam Konyak, moderated the sessions. Hundreds of womenfolk from Konyak community, church leaders, KUK and KSUK officials attended the seminar.
