Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya on Tuesday advised the students that their ultimate goal should not only be to acquire degrees and earn money, but also to empower and serve the society.
Addressing the awards ceremony of Bharat Scout and Guides (BS&G) at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan here, Acharya said Scouts and Guides movement increased strength and confidence in children in their bid to move forward in the society.
Congratulating the awardees, Acharya reminded that the “organisation is strength and community is the foundation of future life”, adding that the award was the beginning of empowerment in life to contribute more meaningfully to the society.
According to Acharya, Nagas had the advantage of having education in English medium, besides being disciplined and organised from early life. He encouraged the students to bring about development in the State by empowering its people.
He also urged the students to explore entrepreneurship and create jobs along the way for development of Nagaland and asked them to be responsible for the society.
In his presidential address, adviser Youth Resource and Sports, Er. Zale Neikha said Bharat Scouts and Guides was a social service movement open to all young people in accordance with the purpose and principles. He expressed confidence that BS&G movement in the State would produce “respectable, humble and strong-willed” personalities to take the people forward.
Altogether 34 guides and 21 scouts from Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung received the awards.
Earlier, Higher Education director and Nagaland State BS&G vice-president, Kuholi Chishi delivered the welcome address, while students from Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima presented a special song.
Governor slams Tharoor, demands apology
Governor Acharya slammed senior Congress leader Sashi Tharoor for describing Naga headgear as “outlandish” and “hilarious” and termed it “unacceptable”, while asking him to seek apology from the Nagas.
Acharya remarked, on the sidelines of an awards ceremony, that there was an agenda behind Tharoor’s statement that could not be tolerated.
Pointing out that Tharoor was highly educated and a respectable person, an MP who had also served in the United Nations, the governor said a man of his stature should not be commenting adversely on the habit and culture of any community, adding this was not acceptable.
