North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has condemned the recurring incidence of violence and discrimination meted out to indigenous people from the north east working or studying in different cities of India on account of their physical appearances. NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa and secretary general Sinam Prakash Singh in a statement, said such incidents have been on the rise especially following the outbreak of Covid-19. It may be added, that the north east community in various parts of India have become the target for the anti-Chinese sentiment in India after Covid-19.

NESO said it was disheartening to note that while the world at large was striving together to restrict the spread of Covid19, people from the region were concerned about their loved ones facing humiliation apart from mental distress. NESO has appealed to the Centre to put in place all necessary arrangements to ensure physical and emotional wellbeing of the NE community in various parts of the country. It also suggested the respective chief ministers of NE states liaise with their counterparts in order to ensure that perpetrators of hate crimes were brought to book and that future occurrences of such incidents are completely avoided.
