State department of animal husbandry & veterinary services (AH&VS) has reiterated that import of pigs into Nagaland has been banned with effect from April 29, 2020 due to outbreak of “African Swine Fever” in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Addl Director & HoD AH&VS, Dr. Budhi Lama, has requested the village authorities, public and consumers especially in Dimapur, Wokha, Mon, Longleng and Peren– bordering Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, to remain vigil and refrain from importing/smuggled live pigs and pork from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The department reminded that “African Swine Fever” disease was highly infectious with very high mortality rate up to 100%.
At present, the department said there was treatment and vaccine available, adding that the only option was to cull, humane slaughter and dispose the pig. The department said the entire pig population in the outbreak area/ colony/ village/ district etc can be wiped out causing huge economic losses.
