In an unfortunate incident, a house was swept away by a landslide that occurred at Lozutangang mepu (ward), Ungma village on Saturday evening.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, house’s owner T Temjen Jamir alleged that the landslide was caused due to earth cutting for extension of two-lane highway between Mokokchung and Kohima. He said after the completion of the earth cutting last week, a long crack appeared in his front yard on Saturday morning. Hence, he added that the family was alarmed and decided to transfer a few of their household belongings.
But, by around 4:30 pm, he claimed the crack widened further, forcing his family members to abandon their work. However, by 5:30 pm, the bathroom was the first to be pulled down by the landslide, which was followed by the house after 6 pm.
Temjen stated that since the structures were half way down and the highway had to be cleared for traffic, the structures was being burned down under the close observation of fire personnel with the understanding of the district administration and Ungma Village Council.
