A scuffle reportedly broke out between supporters of Ward-7 National People’s Party’s (NPP) candidate Nikali Sumi Chophi and BJP supporters on the intervening night of June 20 and 21.
Addressing the media, K Puloto Chishi, chief agent of Nikali, alleged that a group, around 60 to 70 individuals, passed by Nikali’s residence shouting slogans supporting its candidate. In response, he said NPP supporters also chanted the same. However, he alleged that the BJP supporters returned to the area and entered the candidate’s residence, during which a scuffle broke out and a vehicle was damaged.
He stated that the elders had to step in to defuse the situation from further escalation. Nikali expressed concern over the incident and questioned the motive behind the late-night intrusion, suggesting that it was an attempt to intimidate or assault her.
Despite the incident, she reiterated her commitment to a peaceful campaign and urged the youth of Ward 7 to ensure a peaceful election process, besides encouraging voters not to be intimidated and to exercise their right to vote freely.
She also urged the district administration and competent authorities to look into the matter with utmost seriousness. NPP worker Kiyeli Sumi alleged that the party’s campaign materials, including banners, flags, and posters, were damaged, though she did not directly attribute this to any party, while clarifying that none of the youth who had entered the candidate’s residence were from Ward 7. She condemned the intrusion and carrying of sticks by the attackers, urging all parties to maintain peace. She expressed hope that the authorities would take appropriate action.
Asked about filing complaint, Nikali confirmed that complaints had been lodged with Suburban Police Station and the Ward 7 sector officer, adding that the NPP would also be filing a formal complaint.
Puloto also questioned the motive of campaigning at midnight when the stipulated time for campaigning was between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., pointing out that their actions were clearly against the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) of the State Election Commission.
