So_Li_Sü, a dynamic ensemble of nine artists formed in 2024, has made a significant mark on the theatre scene with their debut play, “Süngra.” After a residential workshop and show in Ungma earlier this year on January 27, “Süngra” was chosen to perform at the prestigious Abhinaya National Theatre Festival, held from August 1-3 in Hyderabad, as informed by the team.
“Süngra,” an exploration of the Ao community’s evolution from the Six Stones, was met with critical acclaim. The play, directed by Kilangtemsu Imsong, delves into the role of Lijaba, the God of land, in nurturing the community and underscores the cultural significance of the Hornbill Bird among the Ao’s.
Through its rich narrative, “Süngra” emphasizes the traditions, culture, and identity of the Ao people, illustrating their unique chronicles and the survival tactics of their ancestors. One of the play’s poignant highlights is its depiction of the headhunting era, portraying the internal turmoil it caused. Despite the chaos, the play honors the sacrifices made by ancestors to create a tapestry of resilience and beauty that defines the Ao community today.
The costume and prop design for “Süngra” was spearheaded by Temjensunep and Salong.
Kilangtemsu Imsong, founder and director of So_Li_Sü, graduated from the National School of Drama and received the NEZCC Young Talented Award in 2017.
