As the league stage of the Dr. T. Ao Trophy 2024 wrapped up, the quarterfinal lineup is now set with teams from Niuland, Phek, Peren, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mokokchung, Mon, and Noklak advancing. The final day of the league matches saw dramatic performances, most notably from Tuensang, who secured a 2-0 victory over Mokokchung to top Group C.
Tuensang’s win came with goals from Tsalichem in the final moments of the first half and another from Bapen Yimjong in the 60th minute. The result solidified Tuensang’s place as the only team in the tournament yet to concede a goal. They will now face Noklak in the quarterfinals on September 24.
Meanwhile, Longleng put on an impressive display in a 7-1 demolition of Kiphire, despite both teams being out of the tournament. Shepa and Ngamsang Phom both scored braces, while Chongshen Sangba Chang, Pongnyei Phom, and Shamlau M. Konyak added to the tally. Kiphire’s lone goal came from Pewsuthong in the 37th minute.
Noklak earned their quarterfinal berth by defeating Tseminyu 4-0, with a hat-trick from captain Longkhoi, who scored in the 12th, 16th, and 41st minutes. Thangsoi opened the scoring in the 7th minute, securing an easy win.
Mon also cruised to a 4-0 victory over Wokha, with Amun Munshaham scoring twice, followed by a brace from Manton. Mon will now meet Mokokchung in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals, set for September 24, promise exciting matchups: Niuland vs Zunheboto, Phek vs Peren, Tuensang vs Noklak, and Mokokchung vs Mon. With stakes rising, all eyes are on these teams as they battle for a place in the semifinals of Nagaland’s premier football tournament.
