Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma on Monday disclosed that the police had made significant progress in connection with the October 10 abduction case by identifying those responsible.

Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the Police Commemoration Day observed at Police Headquarters (PHQ) here on Monday, Sharma said while some of the suspects had gone underground, leads had emerged, and that efforts were underway to apprehend them.

He appealed to the NSCN-K Niki Sumi faction to cooperate in locating its cadres involved, emphasising that it would foster better relations among the police, the group, and the public.

DGP also urged the general public to assist by sharing information, cautioning that while a reward had been announced for those providing information, those found sheltering or harbouring the abductors would face legal consequences.

Referring to the rise in abduction cases in Dimapur and Kohima, Sharma admitted both the cities had witnessed sporadic incidents of abduction, but assured that the police force had been deployed in sufficient numbers, while surveillance was being enhanced to combat these crimes.

He revealed that several cadres and criminals had been arrested with weapons, but emphasised the importance of public cooperation to further improve policing efforts.

He mentioned that Nagaland Police had been engaging with civil society organisations (CSOs) and the chamber of commerce to encourage citizens to report extortion and abduction cases through NGOs and village bodies. This approach, he maintained, would offer individual protection while ensuring that complaints reached the authorities.

On the ceasefire ground rules (CFGR), the DGP acknowledged that many rules were outdated and needed to be reviewed. He stressed that ambiguities in their interpretation should be clarified to prevent violations by either factions or government agencies. The Nagaland Police, he said, would welcome both local and central-level discussions on this matter.
