The Delhi Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union [DENSU] has rescued a young woman from Eastern Nagaland who became a victim of human trafficking.
In a statement, DENSU said that the victim, in her late teens, was initially brought to Dimapur from her village by a woman of her own community, who then introduced her to a non-local lady, who gained her trust and took her to Jaipur under the pretense of employment at a “dubious” wellness spa.
Shortly after, she was moved to Delhi by the same non-local woman and her associate from Jaipur, and was introduced to another accomplice who arranged her housemaid job. After working as a housemaid for a week, a fraudulent agent from Dimapur coerced her to leave the job and travel to Noida to meet a male acquaintance, where she suffered severe physical and verbal abuse.
She however managed to escape, and fled to the man who had initially arranged her job. Upon learning of her situation, DENSU said they quickly intervened, ensuring her rescue and safe return home.
Noting that this was not an isolated incident, the DENSU has warned against the rise of deceptive recruitment tactics targeting rural youth, particularly from Eastern Nagaland. “These fraudulent schemes specifically exploit vulnerable young people by luring them with false promises of lucrative jobs and better opportunities,” union stated.
The student body urged village leaders to remain vigilant, raise awareness, and report any suspicious activities to local authorities, while also advising its members in Delhi to stay connected with the union, as unregistered individuals often faced greater difficulties in such situations.
DENSU expressed gratitude to its advisors and advisor for Social Welfare Wangpang Konyak, who financed the victim’s flight back home with coordinated efforts of various Eastern Nagaland based students’ union.
DENSU has called upon all community members residing in Delhi to stay connected with the union, emphasizing the importance of registration, adding that unregistered members often face difficulties in times of such crisis.
