Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, met with Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on Thursday to explore potential collaborations in biotech startups and health innovations in India, as announced by the Ministry of Science & Technology. Their discussions, which took place during Gates’ visit to India, focused on advancements in gene therapy, vaccine innovation, biotechnology manufacturing, and the country’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.

Singh highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has experienced a significant rise in biotech innovations, supported by initiatives such as Bio E3—biotechnology for the economy, employment, and environment. He emphasized the crucial role of private players and startups in driving the nation’s bio-revolution, underscoring structured mechanisms like the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) that promote collaborations.

Gates praised India’s progress in biotechnology and acknowledged its leadership in vaccine development, referencing partnerships that produced the HPV and Covid-19 vaccines. He recognized India’s research ecosystem as offering vast opportunities for global health advancements and expressed interest in supporting efforts to combat diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.

Singh noted that there are over 10,000 startups currently operating in the biotechnology sector, with around 70% focused on medical and health biotech, while others contribute to agriculture, environment, and industrial biotechnology. He affirmed the government’s commitment to scaling these innovations through increased funding and policy measures to facilitate faster commercialization.

Additionally, the two leaders discussed the potential for direct investments in Indian biotech startups through Gift City, a financial hub aimed at attracting global investments. Gates mentioned that while the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation primarily focuses on philanthropy, new financial structures could enhance direct investments in promising Indian startups. Singh reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering public-private partnerships to ensure ongoing growth in the biotechnology sector, stating that with enhanced research funding and international collaboration, India is poised to become a global hub for biotech innovation.
