A new study by AIIMS Delhi emphasizes the urgent need to integrate mental health support into cancer care, benefiting both survivors and caregivers. Published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, the research highlights the psychological struggles that accompany a cancer diagnosis, including fear, anxiety, and depression.

Lead researcher Dr. Abhishek Shankar advocates for expanding psycho-oncology services within routine cancer treatment, ensuring caregivers—often overlooked—receive necessary emotional and logistical support. The study notes that post-treatment challenges, such as long-term side effects and identity reconstruction, further strain patients’ mental health.

Caregivers, who play a crucial role in providing emotional and physical assistance, frequently experience burnout, isolation, and psychological distress. Researchers underscore the importance of addressing these needs through a holistic approach that integrates mental health care into oncology.

Despite advancements in cancer treatment, mental health resources remain insufficient. The study calls for systemic changes to ensure survivors and caregivers receive comprehensive psychological support in their journey beyond cancer.
