The District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) quarterly meeting of the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Kohima was held on May 1, at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Conference Hall, Kohima.
According to a DIPR report, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, who praised the committee for its proactive measures in raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, particularly through programs in schools.
Buchem remarked on the evolution of societal perceptions, sharing that white teeth were once considered unmanly, but attitudes have since shifted significantly. He acknowledged the role of children in spreading awareness about tobacco’s negative impact within their families and communities.
District Nodal Officer Dr. I. Simon Sumi explained the criteria for schools to achieve a Tobacco-Free status, which includes adhering to established guidelines. He discussed various types of smokers—active, passive, and third-hand and stressed the importance of displaying ‘No Tobacco’ signage in public spaces.
Dr. Sumi also highlighted key provisions of the Tobacco Control Law, including the prohibition of smoking in public areas, restrictions on advertising tobacco products, and the ban on selling tobacco to individuals under 18 or near restricted zones. He detailed penalties for violations, ranging from fines to the cancellation of trade licenses.
During the meeting, 13 schools were officially declared Tobacco-Free, including Assam Rifles Public School, St. Andrews School Jotsoma, and GHS Meriema, among others. Social Worker of DTCC Kohima, Achila Walling, presented a comprehensive report on the cell’s recent activities, further emphasizing the progress made in tobacco control efforts.
The meeting underscored the importance of sustained awareness and strict enforcement of tobacco control measures to safeguard public health in Kohima.
