The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) hosted a significant workshop on the Exam Reforms Management Plan to bring together stakeholders and discuss the roadmap for implementing examination reforms in the state.
Deputy Project Director, NECTAR, Avelu Ruho, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the collaboration between school education departments in laying the foundation for reforms.
She underscored the shift from rote memorization to competency-based assessments in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and expressed gratitude to NBSE for its active involvement in shaping the future of exam reforms.
Secretary NBSE, Rangumbuing Nsarangbe, acknowledged NECTAR’s contribution to extensive capacity-building initiatives for all stakeholders. He invited officials from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) to deliberate on the next steps for implementation.
The technical partner, Educational Initiatives, which has been engaged in two phases since 2022, presented a detailed assessment of prevailing examination practices and outlined recommendations across four key areas: Strengthening Evaluation Practices; Strengthening Inclusive Assessments; Strengthening School-Based Assessments; and Strengthening Paper-Setting Structures.
Workshop participants engaged in discussions on sustainability strategies, institutionalization, and the structured transfer of responsibilities among various educational stakeholders.
Delivering the closing remarks, Commissioner and Secretary, School Education & SCERT, Kevileno Angami, highlighted the importance of collaboration between NBSE and SCERT for successful exam reforms. She stressed that meaningful assessment improvements must begin with curriculum design and the alignment of Learning Outcomes (LOs) formulated by SCERT and NBSE.
She further stated that the Primary School Leaving Certificate (Class 5 exams) conducted by DoSE should adopt the same structured approach for paper setting, evaluation, school-based assessments, and inclusive assessments to ensure consistency in education reforms.
