Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio has emphasized on the need for unity among Nagas as division hindered the resolution of issues, particularly the Naga political issue.
Speaking at the Moatsü-cum-Mini Hornbill Festival 2025 here Friday, Dr. Rio asserted that the fragmentation of Naga society into numerous groups and organizations has become a significant obstacle.
“Unless Nagas come together; with this kind of division in hand, it is very difficult to resolve any issue,” the Chief Minister stated. He urged all Naga groups to unite and make common decisions beneficial for the Naga people, stressing that “Unity is the need of the day.”
Dr. Rio also called upon leaders to reflect on the future and highlighted concerns regarding the proliferation of organizations within the state. “Too many organizations have too many heads with too many taxes and problems,” he added, underlining the need to address this trend.
Connecting his message to the festival, Dr. Rio extended Moatsü greetings and spoke about the significance of tribal festivals in Naga tradition, where forefathers sought blessings for protection and prosperity. “Though we became Christians, we remember the good and best practices of our forefather,” he remarked, adding that festivals are occasions to gather, celebrate, and protect rich cultural heritage.
He described festivals as a time for renewing friendships, practicing for-giveness, and strengthening bonds among the Naga people. He expressed hope that such festivals would continue to foster brotherhood and a sense of family among all Naga tribes.
Prior to the main event, a civic reception was held in honour of the Chief Minister by the Ao Senden. The celebration programme included a welcome address by Ao Senden President Marsanen Im-song and Moatsü greetings delivered by Advisor Imkong L Imchen and the President of the Tenyimi Union Nagaland(TUN) and a brief message by Minister RD Metsubo Jamir.
Cultural performances including folk song presented by the Watsu Mungdang, a special musical number by the Class of Music Mokokchung, and a folk dance performed by the Tzurangkong Senso Mungdang were the highlights.
The organizers also hosted the final match of the inter-ward tug of war competition, where Salangtem ward emerged victorious over Sungkomen ward. The programme concluded with a traditional Moatsü feast.
