Dimapur police claimed that the continuation of one-way traffic system along Nyamo Lotha Road up to Holy Cross School junction has significantly improved peak hour traffic flow at important junctions at the heart of Dimapur city.
Responding to a report on the single-traffic system on NL Road, published recently in this newspaper, Dimapur police through DCP(Crime) and PRO acknowledged the concerns raised by sections of traders, residents and commuters and said the one-day traffic system since its implementation has significantly improved the peak hour traffic flow at important junctions within the city.
DCP & PRO stated that the new system has reduced head on vehicle accidents at key junctions, eased pedestrian movement to high footfall zones (School and Markets) and improved traffic flow towards Supermarket, MP Road, Eros Lane corridors etc.
The system was initially introduced in October 2024 to facilitate the smooth rehabilitation work of the Road Over Bridge (ROB), police said, adding it was retained even after the ROB was reopened in February 2025 based on traffic assessment and public safety concern.
Police said it acknowledged individual inconveniences, but maintained that broader benefits to public safety and overall city mobility must be taken into account.
Further PRO said a fresh traffic audit was also underway to assess the post ROB situation and informed that any changes made would be evidence based and aimed at long relief for all the road users. PRO also reaffirmed Dimapur Police’s commitment to developing a more balanced, efficient and inclusive traffic system for Dimapur.
