A consumer awareness programme themed “Consumers! Know Your Rights” was conducted at Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School (RGHSS), Kohima, on May 14, 2025.

The event was organized by the department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Kohima, in collaboration with the Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) and the NSS Unit of RGHSS.

According to DIPR report, resource person, advocate and retainer lawyer of KDLSA, Sunjib Rana, delivered an insightful address on consumer rights and responsibilities. He highlighted the importance of consumer awareness, emphasizing that every individual was a consumer from birth to death. Using real-life examples of misleading advertisements, he urged attendees to be vigilant and to report unfair trade practices.

Explaining the grievance redressal process under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Rana outlined the three-tier system for handling complaints—from the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) for cases under Rs. 50 lakh, to the State Commission for disputes up to Rs. 2 crore, and the National Commission for higher-value cases and appeals.

He also addressed concerns about online shopping and advised students to keep purchase receipts and unboxing videos as evidence for claims. He also discussed medical negligence, informing that doctors and hospitals can be held accountable under consumer protection laws.

Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LMCP), Shiekhozo, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the significance of legal metrology in everyday transactions.

The event was chaired by B. Orenvungo Yanthan, program officer of the NSS Unit, while the welcome address was delivered by vice principal Sedengunuo Mary Solo. The session aimed to empower students with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
