National Dengue Day 2025 was observed on Friday at the Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Hall, Kohima under the theme “Check, Clean, Cover: Steps to Defeat Dengue.”
The event was organized by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), with an aim to strengthen preventive actions before the monsoon and encourage public participation in controlling dengue transmission.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Neisakho Kere, joint director & SPO (NVBDCP), highlighted the dengue situation in Nagaland, with reference to the 2023 outbreak and measures taken to curb its spread.
He emphasized vector control, including fogging infected areas, removing vegetation near homes to eliminate mosquito resting spots, and personal protective measures such as mosquito nets, repellents, and proper clothing.
The initiative also promoted weekly “dry days” for communities to clear water containers, tires, and plant pots to prevent mosquito breeding. Hospitals were urged to set up dengue wards to minimize transmission risks. Additionally, public awareness campaigns were carried out through television, radio, newspapers, and social media.
Earlier, Dr. Tinurenla Anichari, deputy director, NVBDCP, stressed the importance of prevention due to the lack of specific treatment for dengue. She urged a multi-sectoral approach involving local authorities and communities to minimize breeding grounds and control the disease.
The event, chaired by Dr. Kevilhulie Meyase, DPO CD-1, Kohima, concluded with a vote of thanks by Tiatemsu Ozukum, AMO, DVBO, Kohima. The observance also marked the 10th National Dengue Day since its inception in 2016, reinforcing the message that collective action is key to defeating dengue.
