Forest fire has been raging on for the fourth day along the boundaries of Humtso, Elumyo and other villages under Wokha district and devastated extensive tracts of forest and semi-forest areas.
Though the fire has been reduced to a great extent, the inferno appeared to be spreading towards the lower western direction, along the valley between Elumyo and Pongitong. Residents fear that there was every possibility of the winds creating further havoc. The cause of the fire was not known.
Meanwhile, on the night of March 11, a major fire broke out on the western slope of the Assam Rifles Headquarter, Wokha.
The fire posed grave threats to the lives and properties of the people living within the vicinity of the camp.
It was also reported that several hectares of forest land along Wokha-Mokokchung road were destroyed by fire a few weeks back.
