Thousands of womenfolk staged a silent procession Friday demanding capital punishment to Bekuto a.k.a. Beto Zhimomi (21), involved in the alleged rape and murder of a 20-year old Avinuo of Kirha village July 21, who is under police custody. Beto was arrested by police on August 18.
Holding banners, placards and photo of the accused, the procession under the initiative of Chakhroma Women Organization (CWO) started from Dhobinala and proceeded towards DC office and submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Dimapur. Joined by several women folk from various unions and organization the procession ended peacefully with a mass prayer.
Some of the women holding banners and placards which read, “Capital punishment be awarded before the culprit could rape and kill more women”, “Beto Zhimomi is a rapist and murderer”, “no bail for Bekuto, son of a beast” etc, who had gathered outside DC office yelled out in unison, “WE CARE” three times, at the end of the procession.
The memorandum jointly signed by representatives from various unions and organizations addressed to DC Dimapur was handed over to ADC, Sedevikho Khro as DC was out of station.
After receiving the memorandum, Sedevikho assured the women organizations that justice would done at the earliest, as per their demand mentioned in the memorandum. In the memorandum, the representatives of CWO and other tribe women organizations have demanded life imprisonment, deny bail to the accused Beto Zhimomi son of Khehoto Zhimomi for his monstrous and inhuman crime and that no lawyer be allowed to plea any IPC section under any circumstance for bail release.
The women organizations demanded warrant charge sheets to Beto for trespassing the victim’s house “without the consent of the owner”, rape and cold blooded murder, strangulation, physical violence, sexual abuse and robbery and added that any compromise or negotiation by any individual, politician or even national workers, the public would be compelled to take its own course of action.
Pointing out that repeated heinous crimes have been committed on young girls in the area, the organizations demanded permanent security protection for Kirha village from those security forces attached to the airport.
It further urged the state government to take due cognizance and reward befitting and deserving award to SP Dimapur, SDPO and the lady investigation officer Yawao Konyak for their tireless efforts in nabbing the accused.
Stating that the shocking barbaric crime has not only effected the family of the deceased, her village or tribe, but also to the whole Naga public, including women, the women folk voiced out in cohesion that nothing less than life imprisonment for Beto Zhimomi would ensure that justice done as per the law.
CWO: Meanwhile, in a separate press statement, the CWO said the movement against atrocities towards girl child and women was the beginning of the end. It said the stepping stone for every girl and woman has been laid today to march forward to bring justice to all the victims and family.
Making an appeal to menfolk and every citizen of Dimapur to come forward to fight against the atrocities, the CWO also requested all villages and colonies to reinforce their youths to “streamline the concept of human rights and to put an end to discrimination against girl child and women.”
Further, reflecting upon huge turn out, the CWO expressed gratitude to everyone and prayed that Almighty God bless them for their participation.
