Anti Tobacco Cell, KROS College in collaboration with Health and Family Welfare, organised campaign for tobacco-free under the theme, “tobacco free living” with district nodal officer, NTCP, Dr. Arenla Walling at Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama and St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Viswema on August 9.
During the campaign, Dr. Walling termed tobacco use as one of the chief preventable causes of death in the world. She said tobacco use generally began during adolescence and continued through adulthood sustained by addiction to nicotine.
Dr. Walling said recent trends indicate towards an earlier age of initiation and rising smoking prevalence rates among children and adolescents.
KROS College lecturer and in-charge of anti tobacco cell, Keliihol Tase, outlined the objectives the cell. He said that for schools to effectively prevent and reduce youth tobacco use among their students, the school authorities must create an environment that encouraged anti-tobacco beliefs and behaviours.
It may also be noted that SJHSS has been declared as tobacco free school, whereas LHSS was yet to be declared officially as tobacco free school by the department.
